Hourglass

The hourglass, also known as the sand clock, is a device for measuring time. The western hourglass consists of two glass balls and a narrow connecting pipe. The time is measured by the time it takes for the glass ball filled with sand to flow from the top through the narrow pipe into the bottom glass ball. Once all the sand has flowed to the bottom glass ball, the hourglass can be reversed to measure the time, and the general hourglass has a nominal run time of 1 minute.

Introduction

The earliest hourglasses found in the West were around 1100 AD, which was later than the hourglass in our country. China's hourglass is also an ancient instrument for measuring time. The hourglass is manufactured in much the same way as a leak, which measures time based on when the quicksand leaks from one container to another. This method of using quicksand instead of water is because the cold air in the north of China is cold and the water is easy to freeze.

The most famous hourglass is the “five-round hourglass” created by Zhan Xiyuan in 1360. The quicksand flows from the funnel-shaped sand pool to the sand bucket on the side of the first wheel, driving the first wheel, which drives the mechanical gears of all levels to rotate. The last stage gear drives the middle wheel that rotates on the horizontal plane. The center wheel has a pointer on the axis, and the pointer rotates on a knurled instrument disc to display the moment. This display method is almost the same as the modern clock. The surface structure is identical. In addition, Zhan Xiyuan also skillfully added a mechanical dialing device to the middle wheel to remind the two wooden men standing on the five-wheel hourglass. Every hour or moment, the two wooden people will come out on their own and drum the time. This hourglass is separated from the auxiliary astronomical instrument and has become a mechanical clock structure independently. Due to the water pressure limitation, the hourglass is more accurate than the leak.

Influencing factor

Factors affecting the time hourglass include: the amount of filler, the shape of the curve of the inner wall of the glass sphere (the chronological difference between the hourglass and the inverted hourglass), the width of the neck tube, the type and quality of the filler. The earliest hourglass used to use tomb marble powder, iron filings and eggshell powder. Modern hourglasses generally use artificially made glass beads. According to the German hourglass manufacturer KOCH's documentation, the 30-minute hourglass error can be controlled within 1 minute, and the hourly hourglass error is about 5 minutes. Note: It is not a timing instrument that can be compared to the accuracy of modern timing instruments.

Gift meaning

The hourglass symbolizes love, friendship and happiness. This means that we want happiness forever, and cherish love and friendship forever! Time is dying, things are changing, years are passing, memories are gone, when thoughts are gone, memories are already extravagant, and the time of forgetting will only be sealed in the bottom of my heart.

The hourglass is a representative of the passage of time, to cherish. There may be no difference in color; second, it can represent feelings, and the hourglass expresses a kind of farewell. The process of sand falling is also a process of reminiscing the beautiful fragments between friends.
